The definitive guide to branded apparel in Italy
From T-shirts to technical jackets — fabric, decoration, sizing curves and supplier-quality realities for Italy procurement teams.
Fabric reality — what 180gsm, 240gsm and 320gsm actually mean
Fabric weight (gsm) is the single most predictive quality variable. 140–160gsm T-shirts are giveaway-grade and feel cheap after 5 washes. 180–200gsm is the modern corporate baseline. 220–260gsm is heavyweight T-shirts that survive 50+ washes. Polos run 200–240gsm pique cotton. Hoodies and crewnecks are 280–340gsm fleece. Below 180gsm = budget; above 240gsm = premium.
Decoration techniques and when to use each
Silk-screen print is the workhorse for cotton T-shirts — sharp solid Pantone colours, hits Delta-E ≤ 2.5, survives 100+ washes, MOQ 50 from €4 ex-IVA. Embroidery is the premium choice for polos, caps and jackets — survives forever, signals quality, MOQ 50 from €7. DTF transfers handle photo logos and gradients on any fabric, MOQ 25 from €5. Sublimation works only on light polyester, but covers the full garment edge-to-edge. Heat-transfer vinyl is fast and cheap but limited to 1–2 colours.
Sizing curve for Italy
Default Italy unisex sizing curve: 5% XS, 15% S, 30% M, 30% L, 15% XL, 5% XXL. Add XXXL (+€2/unit) for inclusive runs. Women's cut runs one size smaller — recommend explicit women's SKU rather than 'unisex-cut-for-women'. Apparel returns and exchanges are 8–12% of any first run; we plan 5% buffer stock at Milano hub for size swaps.
Italy tax, labelling and care instructions
IVA 22% via SdI (Sistema di Interscambio). EU textile labelling regulation requires fibre composition, country of origin and care symbols on every garment — we add compliant woven or printed labels in Italia before dispatch from Milano hub.
Sustainability — what certificates actually mean
GOTS-certified organic cotton (full traceability, social criteria, restricted chemical inputs). OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (textile safety — no harmful substances). Fair Wear Foundation (audit of supplier factories). GRS (Global Recycled Standard) for rPET. WRAP certification for ethical workplaces. Always certificate number on PO — verbal claim is not a certificate.
FAQ
Should we go embroidery or print?
Polos and caps = embroidery. T-shirts = silk-screen. Hoodies = either, embroidery looks more premium. Photo logos = DTF transfer.
What about the company size range?
We stock XS to XXXL standard; 4XL/5XL available on order with +€2–€4/unit surcharge.
How long does branded apparel last?
180gsm T-shirt = 30–40 washes. 220gsm = 80+ washes. Embroidered polo = effectively forever. Heat-vinyl T-shirt = 25–30 washes.
Pantone matching on apparel?
Silk-screen and embroidery hit Delta-E ≤ 2.5. DTF/sublimation 4–6. Heat-vinyl uses stock colours only.
Care instructions translation?
EU care symbols are international, but textual care is required in the official language(s) of the destination country — we apply Italy-language compliant labels.
