Four conversations with the people who do the work
Four people who run merchandise programmes, answering on the record about the parts that go wrong.
Four interviews, recorded and transcribed. A founder on why the company started making merchandise at all. A production lead on what happens between the approved proof and the finished pallet. A sustainability lead on the certificates she has to produce and the claims she refuses to sign. A client on the side of the table that writes the cheque.
The production interview is the most useful one for buyers. It covers the decisions that determine whether a date holds: when a colour is locked, why one shipment is split into three, what a second sample costs in weeks, and why a missing button on a polo shirt can stop a whole run.
Each interview is written out rather than summarised, with the questions shown so you can see where a short answer was followed by a long one. That is usually where the useful detail sits.
Four interviews
Each one is transcribed in full with the questions shown, so the answers can be checked against what was actually asked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these edited?
Yes, for length, and the questions are published so you can see what was asked.
Who chooses the interviewees?
We do, with the aim of covering the parts of the process that buyers never see.
Can we suggest someone to interview?
Yes, and we would rather interview a client than ourselves.
