The Palio di Siena is the bareback horse race held twice each year on the shell-shaped paving of Piazza del Campo. Ten of the seventeen contrade take part on each date: the July Palio is run in honour of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and the August Palio on the Assumption. Three trial mornings (the prove) precede each race and the city fills with friends of the contrade, sponsors, journalists and travelling delegations during the four-day window. For contrada associations, brand teams and corporate guests joining the event the window is short and the audience is concentrated, so any merch programme has to be prepared in advance, correctly addressed and split per recipient — from contrada gifts to the cena della vittoria dinners and sponsor suites.

The audience around the Palio is layered. There are the contrada friends and the soci who live the race year-round; the sponsors who book a reserved grandstand seat and a hospitality dinner; the journalists who fly in for the day; the delegations from partner brands who want a curated keepsake of the race. Each layer wants something different. The soci want contrada colours on pieces they will actually use. The sponsors want premium objects they can hand to their own guests. The journalists want a small, branded object that travels well in luggage. The delegations want a coordinated set that includes their brand identity alongside the event identity. A merch programme that respects those four layers almost always converts better than one that tries to address all of them with the same item.

Coordinating artwork, per-contrada quantities, addressees and the cena della vittoria guest list is what keeps the kit on the dinner table or at the contrada stand rather than stranded in a courier warehouse. We run pre-production (physical sample, Pantone colour map, debossing proof on wood and ceramic, debossing proof on leather, screen-print proof on cotton), production on Italian districts — Scandicci leather, Maniago steel, Caltagirone and Faenza ceramics, Capannori paper mills in Tuscany, Collodi wood — and delivery to a Siena hotel, contrada headquarter or sponsor residence on a slot the cohort has confirmed. For programmes that mix contrada friends, sponsor guests and corporate hospitality we split into labelled lots per audience, with separate delivery addresses if a Milan- or Rome-based sponsor wants a share of the kit collected from its own office rather than from the Siena hub. For teams following both Palii we replicate the lots per date and run the logistics across both windows with a single operations contact.

A recurring case for our clients is the cena della vittoria and contrada dinners: the guest count is finalised only close to the race and the menus are often customised with the winning contrada’s colours. In these jobs we propose a neutral graphic base — coordinated marks applied to placemats, coasters, wooden place cards and small cardboard — and add the winning-contrada details in a second wave at short run, so that each guest finds a coordinated keepsake of the evening. Print quality on FSC-certified paper and organic cotton is a frequent request for brand teams, and we handle it with screen-printing and digital-printing partners registered with FSC and GOTS certification circuits. For wine producers attending the cena della vittoria with their own bottles, we coordinate climate-controlled inserts so that the bottle and the merchandise travel together in the same lot without risk of condensation damaging paper or leather parts.

Planning across the four-day window

The Palio window is unusual because the race is short but the merch programme has to be planned against a calendar that includes the assignment of horses (the tratta, the evening before the first prova), the three prove mornings, the cena della prova and the historical procession on race day. For sponsors and brand teams the gap between the tratta and the historical procession is roughly thirty hours, and any object that has to be at the dinner table, in the sponsor suite or at the contrada headquarter on race day must be locked and shipped before the tratta. We work backwards from that hour: the production must close two to three weeks before the race; the courier slot must be booked for the Tuesday or Wednesday of race week; the addressee list must be finalised at the same time as the tratta; the cena della vittoria details (winning contrada colours) only add a small reprint to an already produced neutral base.

For sponsor teams that follow the race from Milan or Rome we also handle the kit in two waves: a pre-race shipment that arrives on Tuesday or Wednesday, and a post-race shipment that returns any unused items to the sponsor’s office for storage until the next Palio. This split is a frequent ask because the audience of friends of the contrada who actually take a souvenir home is far smaller than the audience of the contrada stand or the cena della vittoria dinner, and most sponsors do not want surplus kit left in Siena after the race.

Why the Milan hub matters for the Palio

Most contrada associations, brand teams and sponsors organising a Palio merch programme run their Italian operations from Milan. The Milan hub allows us to consolidate graphic files and Pantone references with the brand team, run the pre-production sample on Italian districts and dispatch the lot to Siena on a 24-to-48-hour courier slot from the Lombardy–Tuscany corridor. For programmes pairing the contrada friends with an international sponsor we handle bilingual materials (English and Italian at minimum) and, on request, full multilingual release with text translations aligned with ISO 17100. For programmes that pair the Palio with the Bravìa delle Bravìe in Pisa in early July we replicate the logistics across the two dates with a single operations contact.

Production and logistics toward Siena

Before production begins, lock the artwork, per-recipient quantities, packaging and the named reception point. The exact contrada or sponsor headquarter finalises only against the current hospitality list close to the race — Piazza del Campo itself is a public space and cannot be used as a parcel-reception address on the race day. Siena’s ZTL (limited traffic zone) and night traffic restrictions condition courier access, and most teams combine a Siena hotel or contrada seat with pickup from the venue itself on the day of the race. For teams running multiple contrade in the same edition we replicate the logistics across two or three nodes, so that each contact finds its own lot within minutes of the workplace rather than travelling across town.

For an event in Siena we usually propose a central Siena hotel or contrada headquarter as the primary delivery point, with optional second-leg delivery to a Florence office if the sponsor prefers to take possession of the kit after the race. B2B goods stay within Italy under standard CMR with packing list; for clients subject to CSRD (D.Lgs. 125/2024) we attach a Scope 3 CO₂e sheet per GHG Protocol on the Lombardy–Tuscany route, and on request we integrate the sheet with the data of the production districts involved. Cold-store logistics is not required for this event, but we regularly coordinate temperature-controlled deliveries for food-and-wine producers joining the cena della vittoria dinners with their own tasting tables.

All Italian B2B orders are invoiced in EUR at the standard 22% VAT rate (with reduced 4%, 5% and 10% rates where applicable by product category) and routed through the Agenzia delle Entrate’s Sistema di Interscambio (SdI) to the buyer’s codice destinatario or PEC address. Corp-Merch.IT is a registered Italian VAT operator, listed on VIES for intra-EU operations, and handles reverse charge, split payment and pubblica-amministrazione self-invoicing under current Italian rules. For corporate clients subject to IFRS reporting we also produce an attachment with the valuation of inventory and equity contributions split between income statement and balance sheet.

Preparation timeline

  1. 8–10 weeks out: lock product list, per-recipient quantities and marking methods, including debossing proofs on wood and ceramic.
  2. 5–6 weeks out: approve a physical or pre-production sample for each category (ceramic, wood, textile, paper).
  3. 3–4 weeks out: finish production, AQL 2.5 quality control and per-recipient labelling.
  4. Final week: reconfirm delivery slot, contrada contact and reception point, with a phone briefing for each logistics hub.

Frequently asked questions

When should we launch the order for the Siena Palio?

Eight to ten weeks is the safest window for production in Italy and shipping to a Siena hotel or contrada headquarter. Six to seven weeks work when the product mix is simple and the artwork has been signed off. For teams following both Palii we replicate the lots and the window stretches to ten weeks.

Can the order be delivered directly to Piazza del Campo?

No. Piazza del Campo is a public square and cannot be used as a parcel-reception address on the race day. We deliver to a Siena hotel, contrada headquarter or sponsor residence, with a courier slot agreed the day before. For the prove mornings we propose a 24-hour hotel in the immediate vicinity with a confirmed deposit.

Can we split the order by contrada or by sponsor?

Yes. Contrada friends, sponsor guests and corporate hospitality can be packed and labelled as separate lots, with different delivery addresses if needed. For programmes involving multiple contrade we replicate the lots per hub and consolidate in cases labelled per logistics node.

Is Corp-Merch.IT a partner or official supplier of the Palio?

No. Corp-Merch.IT is an independent external B2B supplier that helps contrada associations, brand teams and sponsors prepare their own merch. It does not organise, sponsor or represent the Palio, the Magistrato delle Contrade, the Municipality of Siena or the contrade themselves.
