Volterra is one of the best-preserved Etruscan towns in Tuscany, perched on the hills above the Val di Cecina about fifty kilometres south-west of Florence. Its upper historic centre keeps the Palazzo dei Priori (thirteenth century, the oldest communal palace in Tuscany), a Roman theatre from the Augustan age, Etruscan walls, and a centuries-old tradition of alabaster working that is still the identity mark of local craftsmanship. The late-August contrada race has roots in the civic traditions of the medieval libero Comune, and the weekend that surrounds it is treated by the local community as part of its own identity: the eve propiziatoria, the Saturday morning flag-throwing competition, the Saturday afternoon historical corteo in Renaissance costume that runs through Piazza dei Priori and the upper town lanes, and the Sunday contrada race with bareback horses on the ring set up in Piazza dei Priori.
For contrade, brand teams, corporate delegations and sponsors who want to pair the race with a dedicated merchandise programme, the operational calendar should open already in spring, because the Italian production districts involved — Volterra alabaster (worked in the town’s workshops and, where possible, using production scraps in a circular-economy logic), hand-painted ceramics from Caltagirone and Faenza, small leather goods from Scandicci, Maniago steel, Collodi wood, Como silk, Capannori paper mills for the printed programmes — need to be booked early to deliver the artisanal quality the Palio audience expects. From the Milan hub, Corp-Merch.IT runs the entire cycle for the eight contrade and for the brand teams that accompany them: kick-off with the caporione or with the sponsor’s marketing lead, graphic adaptation of the Palio artwork, district producer qualification, a physical pre-production sample with Pantone map, an item-level bill and a structured proposal within 48 working hours of the brief.
Coordinating artwork, quantities per rione and named recipients is what keeps the kit on the cena della vittoria table or at the contrada’s pickup point instead of sitting in a courier warehouse. For programmes that mix rione friends, sponsor guests and corporate hospitality, we split into recipient-labelled batches, with separate delivery addresses if a sponsor based in Florence, Pisa or Siena prefers to collect its share from its own office rather than the Volterra hub. For teams that follow both the Palio di Volterra and the broader Volterra AD 1398 calendar, we replicate the batches per date and run the operations across both windows with a single point of contact, so that the brand team sees one counterparty across the season.
A recurring request is the cena della vittoria and the rione dinners — the headcount is fixed only just before the race and the menus are often customised with the colours and coat of arms of the winning rione. For these jobs we propose a neutral graphic base — matching marks applied to placemats, alabaster and wood coasters, wooden place cards, small stationery and FSC-certified menu cards — and add the winning rione’s details in a short second run, so that each guest leaves with a coordinated memento of the evening. For Volterra’s alabaster workshops we coordinate delicate packaging with closed-cell foam inserts and paper sleeves, since the material can chip in transit if not properly protected, and we add a handling note on the transport documents for the receiver. For the historical corteo’s figuranti we replicate the graphic base on silk or cotton neckerchiefs, burnished brass pins and small matching items, with dyes that survive industrial washing and packaging in paper bags with a technical sheet attached.
For Italian clients with a VAT number the invoice is issued via the Sistema di Interscambio (SdI) of the Agenzia delle Entrate with 22% VAT in EUR; reduced rates of 4%, 5% or 10% are available for the product categories that qualify them (publishing, art objects, food). Reverse charge for intra-EU buyers registered in VIES, split payment for public-administration stands, recipient code or PEC address for electronic invoice delivery. For clients subject to CSRD reporting (Legislative Decree 125/2024, transposing Directive (EU) 2022/2464) we attach a sustainability sheet per order with a Scope 3 CO₂e estimate following the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain on the Lombardy–Tuscany route and from the production districts involved. For corporate clients under IFRS reporting we also produce an attachment with inventory valuation and capital contributions split between income statement and balance sheet.
