Merchandising for the Italian Sagra della Castagna
- Dates
- Traditionally in the autumn months (October–November), in conjunction with the chestnut harvest in Italian chestnut groves. Specific dates are published by the pro loco or organising committee calendar before the event.
- Venues
- Villages and towns of Italian regions celebrating the chestnut tradition: historic centres, chestnut piazzas, areas adjacent to ancient chestnut groves and to traditional drying sheds. The tradition is present in several Italian regions with typical varieties protected by Slow Food presidia and by consortia of origin (Marrone del Monfenera, Marone di Marone, Castagna di Cuneo PGI, Castagna di Vallerano, Castagna di Montella PGI, Castagna del Prete, Marrone di Combai PGI, Marrone del Casentino).
- General calendar
- The days of the Sagra della Castagna open with visits to chestnut groves, continue with the chestnut harvest, drying demonstrations in traditional drying sheds (metato or slow-fire drying shed), milling for chestnut flour production, tastings of traditional dishes and close with the community tables and small chestnut markets.
The Sagra della Castagna — as celebrated in several Italian regions — re-enacts the chestnut harvest in the chestnut groves, the drying in traditional drying sheds (metati), the milling for chestnut flour production, the working of traditional sweets (castagnaccio, necci, roasted chestnuts, marron glacé, chestnut honey, chestnut brigidini) and closes with the distribution of roasted chestnuts in the piazzas and with the community tables gathering chestnut growers, families and visitors. It is a tradition widespread across Italy, in particular in the hill and mountain regions where chestnut cultivation has a rooted history (Piedmont, Lombardy, Trentino, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Campania, Calabria, Sicily, Sardinia).
For the communities organising the Sagra della Castagna, Corp-Merch.IT runs the full chain from its operational hub for the chestnut growers, the pro loco, the chestnut farms, the chestnut flour producers, the consortia of origin, the schools, the chestnut supply-chain brands and the food sponsors: intake of the chestnut grower’s, chestnut farm’s or consortium’s master artwork (AI, EPS, PDF/X-4 with CMYK images at 300 dpi, FOGRA39 colour profile for print, Pantone for textiles), adaptation to the different customisation techniques (water-based screen-printing on GOTS-certified organic cotton for coordinated chestnut grower uniforms during the harvest, sublimation printing on cotton for tote bags of the festival audience, computer embroidery on cotton and felt for apron-style workwear in the chestnut grove, hot-foil printing on FSC-certified paper for the festival booklets and chestnut variety sheets, laser engraving on chestnut and oak wood for chestnut bag labels and small traditional objects, screen-printing on Faenza ceramics for limited editions of the roasted chestnut bowls), physical pre-production sample with Pantone colour map and technical sheet, production on Italian supply chains (Como textile, Tuscan organic cotton for tote bags, Maniago steel for metal hardware, Faenza ceramics for bowls, Collodi wood for traditional objects and bag labels, Fabriano paper for booklets, Murano glass for limited editions of chestnut honey containers) and delivery to the festival village, the chestnut grove, the traditional drying shed or the pro loco’s consolidation warehouse on slots confirmed by the organising committee.
Five audience tiers, five distinct kits
The individual chestnut grower or chestnut farm during the harvest in the chestnut groves needs coordinated uniforms and chestnut grove work accessories: GOTS-certified organic cotton or wool-blend shirt with computer-embroidered chestnut grower logo, coordinated apron for the work, durable fabric shopper, hat for the peak hours of the harvest. The audience of the days of the Sagra della Castagna wants branded shoppers, limited editions of chestnuts and chestnut flour in coordinated packaging, small coordinated objects (magnets, bookmarks, illustrated cards of the chestnut grove and the metato), tasting spoons and palette knives for the roasted chestnuts. Schools and didactic workshops want didactic kits on the work of the chestnut grower (small wooden tools, illustrated booklets, mini baskets of chestnut). The food and confectionery brands sourcing chestnuts want coordinated gift kits with the festival graphic, limited editions of traditional sweets (castagnaccio, necci, marron glacé). The touristic and food sponsors want coordinated gadgets for their tastings in the piazzas.
Why the Italian hub matters for the Sagra della Castagna
Most chestnut growers, chestnut farms and chestnut flour producers running a merch programme around the Sagra della Castagna coordinate their operations from their village or city base, but launching a coordinated uniform collection, a branded shopper line or a limited-edition chestnut bag collection requires a district supply chain that our hub can orchestrate on Italian territory. Como for silk and silk textiles, Scandicci for the leather of aprons and small leather goods, Maniago for steel and metal hardware, Murano for the glass of chestnut honey containers, Faenza for the ceramics of the roasted chestnut bowls, Padua for the technical paperboard of coffer boxes, Fabriano for the paper of festival booklets, Collodi for the wooden objects of didactic kits and bag labels, chestnut wood for the objects of tradition: the hub lets us consolidate the commissioner’s artwork files, run a physical pre-production sample through Italian supply chains and ship the batch to the Sagra della Castagna village, the chestnut grove, the traditional drying shed or the pro loco’s consolidation warehouse on a tight 24-to-48-hour courier window from the national territory. For programmes involving a delegation of a twinned sagra (twinnings between Sagre della Castagna of various Italian regions and some European regions) we handle bilingual materials (Italian and English as a minimum) and, on request, full multilingual releases with translations aligned to ISO 17100.
Calendar of merch for the Sagra della Castagna
The Sagra della Castagna window is concentrated and must be planned against a calendar that includes the set-up days of the festival opening the previous Friday, the Saturday chestnut harvest in the chestnut groves, the Sunday drying demonstrations in traditional drying sheds and milling for chestnut flour, the great Saturday or Sunday community tables day and the closing of the festival with the small chestnut market. For chestnut growers and chestnut supply-chain brands the gap between confirmation of the Sagra della Castagna graphic and the opening of the Saturday days is normally less than ten weeks, and any object that has to be at the chestnut grower’s meeting point, the chestnut grove or the pro loco warehouse for the first day must be closed and shipped at least one week before the days of the Sagra della Castagna. We work backwards from that moment: production must close two-to-three weeks before the days of the Sagra della Castagna; the courier slot must be booked for the Wednesday or Thursday of festival week; the addressee list must be finalised at the same time as the days calendar is confirmed; the specific details of the edition (year, edition number, celebrated chestnut variety) only add a small reprint to an already-produced neutral graphic base.
